COMMERCE, Texas — OutBack Power, a leading provider of advanced energy storage and power conversion solutions, announced that its EnergyCell 5 battery system has received UL 9540 certification, marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and code-compliant energy storage solutions for residential and light commercial applications.

UL 9540 is the recognized safety standard for Energy Storage Systems (ESS), evaluating the complete integration of battery technology, battery management systems, and power conversion equipment. The certification provides installers, distributors, permitting authorities, and homeowners with increased confidence that the system meets rigorous safety and performance requirements.

The EnergyCell 5 is OutBack Power’s next-generation lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery platform, designed to provide scalable energy storage for backup power, self-consumption, and energy independence applications. Featuring a modular stackable architecture, integrated battery management system, automatic stack communication, and an IP65-rated enclosure, the EnergyCell 5 is engineered for both indoor and outdoor installations.

“Achieving UL 9540 certification is an important milestone for the EnergyCell 5 and reinforces our commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and installer-friendly energy storage solutions,” said Randy Taylor, General Manager of OutBack Power.

“The EnergyCell 5 was designed not only to meet the highest standards for safety and performance, but also to simplify deployment in the field. Its modular, stackable architecture allows installers to avoid the challenges associated with heavy wall-mounted battery systems, reducing installation complexity and expense, making it easier for smaller crews to complete projects efficiently. Combined with a recent reduction in the EnergyCell 5’s price, we’re making it easier than ever for homeowners and installers to access a high-performance energy storage solution.”

The EnergyCell 5 offers:

  • Modular, stackable architecture supporting system expansion as energy needs grow
  • Mobile monitoring app for real-time battery status, performance insights, and system visibility
  • Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry for enhanced safety and longevity
  • Integrated intelligent battery management system (BMS)
  • Automatic battery identification and communication capabilities
  • IP65-rated enclosure for indoor and outdoor installations
  • Up to 8,000 cycle life and a 10-year warranty
  • Integrated safety features including internal fire suppression technology

As energy storage adoption continues to grow, UL 9540 certification is increasingly important for permitting, inspection, and code compliance requirements across North America. The certification helps streamline project approvals while providing assurance that energy storage systems have been evaluated as an integrated solution.

The EnergyCell 5 is available through OutBack Power’s network of authorized distributors and installation partners.
