Modular Lifestyles Green Community

Modular Lifestyles, based in Irvine, California, and founded in 1988, operates as a full-service manufactured home dealer and builder. Parent company Newport Pacific Capital owns five communities in California and manages another 65 parks nationwide, representing more than 14,000 home sites. The manufactured home communities vary in size from 26 to 1,000 units including marinas, RV resorts and apartments. In 2006, sister company Cirus Development built Oak Haven, a senior community in Ojai, California. Modular Lifestyles began developing green, solar powered homes for Oak Haven to promote it as a green community project. These grid-tied homes have received press coverage and won several awards for proven home efficiency improvements and achieving annual $0 electricity bills. The challenge for Modular Lifestyles’ award-winning, grid-tied homes is their location. It is difficult for prospective homeowners to tour a manufactured home and see how efficiently it operates, especially when homeowners live in them. However, the Modular Lifestyles Quest off-grid home is mobile, and therefore available to many visitors in different locations and climate conditions. The home can be located in high elevations where low temperatures and desert environmental conditions exist, and it should perform well in primitive locations where it is either too expensive or even impossible to connect to utility power. In addition to sustainability, green energy sources can offer reliability by keeping the backup battery bank fully charged.   CHALLENGE Create a super-efficient green home using solar power and additional green technologies Design a home to be powered independently from the grid Offer housing with low manufacturing and operation costs Provide housing that is elder-accessible, can be placed in primitive locations, and is movable for use in emergencies   SOLUTION For maximum energy efficiency, Modular Lifestyles uses OutBack products in addition to other green technologies including cork floors, LED lighting, greywater (wastewater generated from domestic activities) recycling systems, recycled glass composite countertops, tankless hot water systems, incinerator toilets and water-saving toilets (depending on the application). Modular Lifestyles homes are located in many different climates, so the design requires a reliable charging power source for the batteries and appropriate insulation to maintain indoor temperatures during the winter and summer. Modular Lifestyles uses the OutBack Power FLEXmax 60 charge controllers, which stand up to extreme variations of climate and solar radiance. The solar energy from OutBack equipment is used to recharge the batteries, which have approximately a four-day charge, onboard the mobile homes. Because of their highly efficient design and off-grid power system, the homes operate with low energy requirements year round. This opened up possibilities for Modular Lifestyles to provide affordable housing in retirement communities to seniors living on fixed incomes. In addition, new homeowners see a significantly increased home value since a resident would potentially only need to pay for propane fuel over the life of the structure with off-grid electricity available.   OUTCOME Homes can now be built in areas without access to utility power Residents of efficient, net-zero green housing can use solar power for heating and air conditioning Modular homes can use reliable off-grid power in extreme environments and remote locations Residents enjoy greater mobility and flexibility in location due to modular efficient design Residents can save between $5,000 and $10,000 per year in energy cost   SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS Location: Irvine, CaliforniaSystem Power: 7.2kWComponents:FLEXpower TWO (2 inverter/chargers, FLEXmax 60 charge controllers and MATE3 system display and controller)

Solamar Event Services

OVERVIEW Solamor Event Services, based in Portland, Oregon, and founded in 2008, uses custom-engineered units to harness sun, wind and biodiesel energy sources to power events such as outdoor concerts, festivals, film shoots and sporting and community events. Solamor provides power via green temporary generators, a technology that only a handful of companies in the United States deliver, while also improving event sustainability by implementing waste reduction strategies and localized procurement. Working with 40 to 50 clients per year, Solamor provides production services such as site operations management, procurement, production management, staff/volunteer coordination and logistics support. Solamor also provides green power for event equipment at concerts and power systems for food and beverage vehicles during food truck festivals. Solamor recognized the challenges tied to providing continuous power for outdoor events, such as dust storms, rain, high winds and other situations that put event success at the mercy of the elements. Additionally, the mobile power trailers designed by Solamor and other companies took up a lot of space to meet the power demands of events, to the detriment of the overall event experience. Solamor found size to be a particularly troublesome point when it began work with the NBC television drama series, Grimm. While the producers of Grimm had increasing power demands, they also wanted a smaller system that did not require a large trailer, so transport on and off the set would not disrupt the large crew or expensive equipment. CHALLENGE Install a renewable energy generation system to provide off-grid powe Design a compact solar and wind trailer with a custom-engineered, aesthetically pleasing design Provide high power output to support unique, energy-intensive events and filming sets using a small system package SOLUTION Previously, Solamor used a variety of inverters to convert solar energy for its mobile trailers. However, the company needed to use multiple inverter systems with complex connections to achieve the high power output required for energy-intensive events. Solamor decided to install OutBack Power Radian inverter/chargers, which are compact and modular, keeping in line with the final smaller WhisperWing design. The WhisperWing is the newest addition to Solamor’s generator fleet, a mobile hybrid energy trailer using solar, wind and biofuel energy sources to provide low-carbon power to Solamor events. With OutBack’s Radian inverters, Solamor’s WhisperWing can deliver 30kW from a trailer that measures 7 feet wide by 12 feet long. The project’s solar arrays consist of eight 250W modules along with two wind turbines that deliver 200 watts each. The energy from the WhisperWing’s solar and wind equipment is converted by an OutBack Power Radian GS8048 inverter/charger, and uses an OutBack Power FLEXmax 80 charge controller. The on-site power capacity of the WhisperWing enables Solamor to offer a green footprint for outdoor or off-grid events, as well as build a business case for offsetting biofuel usage (reduce biofuel dependency by harnessing solar and wind energy). When the WhisperWing trailer is not in use at events and festivals, the Solamor team uses its renewable energy to power the company’s office and offset electricity costs. OUTCOME Mobile renewable power is delivered on-site to outdoor events and lowers the carbon footprint of the event Compact, modular trailer design is ideal for location film shoots and other entertainment production opportunities Energy produced by trailer during downtime offsets Solamor office energy needs True sine wave power from OutBack inverters ensures on-site power quality, and potentially improves audio/video equipment, sound quality and performance SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS Location: Portland, Oregon System Power: 30kW hybrid mobile power systemComponents: •Radian inverter/charger •FLEXmax 80 charge controllers

Sacred Power: Navajo Nation

For hundreds of years, Native American ancestors lived close to the earth in balance with nature. That tradition continues today with their descendants, with many modern tribal citizens working to preserve their ancestors’ way of life and closeness to the earth while also enhancing their lives with technology and amenities. There are presently over 18,000 Native American homes without power. Many of them are located in remote, rural areas too far for power lines to reach—in some cases, only reachable by helicopter. Homes are usually on dirt roads 20 to 30 miles apart, and if it snows or rains, roads become impassible. Usually, it is too costly and not beneficial for utilities and infrastructure to expand power lines to their area; utilities don’t see the potential to recoup their investment from the sparse profits. In the past, Native Americans in these remote areas might have access to refrigeration only by storing ice in ice chests. Most appliances in hogans, traditional Navajo homes, or ranch homes would run on kerosene—from kerosene heaters and lanterns to kerosene-powered refrigerators. Any fuel must be transported to the point of use, adding to cost and complexity. A person living on a ranch might run a 5000W generator to power a 200W television, which wasn’t very efficient and required a propane tank that could hold hundreds of gallons of propane. Native American children attend school, and today need lighting at home to read and study. Senior citizens’ prescriptions require cool refrigeration, power for oxygen tanks or other medical devices. Tribal citizens required a clean source of energy that would provide reliable power for modern conveniences. CHALLENGE Install a solar energy generation system to bring power to inaccessible, remote rural areas that had none before Mitigate greenhouse gases and fume inhalation of Navajo residents from a diesel generator and kerosene appliance operation Ensure uninterrupted power supply for food and supply refrigeration and preservation SOLUTION According to the US Department of Agriculture, access to reliable, affordable electricity is paramount for the economic wellbeing and quality of life for all of the United States’ rural residents. The USDA’s move to provide electricity to rural inhabitants traces its roots to the Rural Electrification Act of 1936, which encourages energy service to customers in rural areas. Sacred Power, an OutBack Power integration partner and Native American-owned and operated provider of renewable and distributive energy systems, designed, manufactured and installed the 650 fully-assembled patented energy systems for the Navajo Nation in New Mexico, in cooperation with the USDA Rural Utility Service. Since Sacred Power works with other US agencies beyond the USDA, such as the US Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the default choice for keeping its installations online with solar energy are OutBack Power’s components that are designed, manufactured and tested in America. Each of these systems is powered by an OutBack FLEXpower ONE single inverter system due to their weather-resistant and rainproof engineering, as well as flexible capacity to support small hogans or large village energy demands within a compact design. The Navajo homes now have access to electricity where they previously only used diesel or kerosene power. Electricity affords them the new ability to store more supplies, preserve food in refrigeration, read books and study at night. In addition, the Native Americans have better health because they aren’t breathing fumes from kerosene-powered devices. In some cases, Native American artisans with new access to electricity can generate better income from e-commerce. They have started a company on the Internet and market their livestock, pottery, weaving or other skills from their remote villages. OUTCOME Clean, economical solar electricity produced on-site at remote villages and homes, yielding refrigeration for preservation of supplies, medicine and lighting to homes while reducing or eliminating the need to import fuel Improved quality of life and better health enjoyed by rural residents Native American artisans take advantage of the new source of income from an access to reliable Internet and e-commerce Elimination of hundreds of gallons of kerosene as well as equipment maintenance, carbon emissions and greenhouse gases from operation of generators SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS Location: Navajo Nation, New Mexico System Power: 2.6 to 3.6kW systemsComponents: FLEXpower ONE (FX inverter/charger FLEXmax charge controller and MATE3

Lead-Acid vs. Lithium Batteries: Which Energy Storage Solution Is Right for You?

As more homeowners and businesses invest in backup power and solar energy systems, one of the most important decisions they’ll make is choosing the right battery technology. For decades, lead-acid batteries were the industry standard for off-grid and backup power applications. Today, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) batteries have emerged as the preferred choice for many new installations, offering significant improvements in performance, longevity, and ease of ownership. Does that mean lead-acid batteries no longer have a place? Not necessarily. Understanding the strengths and limitations of each technology can help you determine which solution best fits your application—and whether it’s time to upgrade.   Understanding the Two Battery Technologies At a high level, both lead-acid and lithium batteries perform the same function: they store energy for use when it’s needed most. Whether you’re keeping essential appliances running during a power outage or storing excess solar energy for later use, your battery bank serves as the heart of your energy storage system. The difference lies in how efficiently, reliably, and conveniently each technology delivers that power over time.   Lead-Acid Batteries: A Proven Technology Lead-acid batteries have been used in renewable energy systems for decades and continue to be a dependable option for many applications. Advantages Lower Initial Cost Lead-acid batteries generally have a lower upfront purchase price, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious projects. Well-Established Technology With decades of proven performance, installers and system owners are familiar with lead-acid battery design, operation, and maintenance. Reliable for Certain Applications For systems with occasional cycling or lower daily energy demands, lead-acid batteries can provide dependable performance when properly maintained. Considerations Lead-acid batteries also come with tradeoffs that many modern system owners should consider: Require regular maintenance (depending on battery type) Heavier and bulkier than lithium alternatives Lower usable capacity due to recommended depth-of-discharge limits Longer charging times Shorter cycle life compared to modern lithium batteries Performance can decline more noticeably over time For many legacy solar and off-grid systems, these limitations were simply accepted as part of battery ownership.   Lithium (LiFePO₄): Designed for Modern Energy Storage Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) batteries represent the latest generation of energy storage technology, offering improvements in safety, efficiency, scalability, and ease of use. Advantages Longer Service Life LiFePO₄ batteries are designed for thousands of charge and discharge cycles, helping reduce replacement frequency over the life of the system. Minimal Maintenance Unlike many traditional lead-acid batteries, lithium systems require little ongoing maintenance, allowing owners to spend less time servicing batteries and more time using them. Higher Usable Capacity Lithium batteries can typically be discharged much deeper without negatively impacting longevity, allowing users to access more of their stored energy. Faster Charging Higher charging efficiency means batteries recharge more quickly, making better use of available solar production. Compact Design Lithium batteries provide more energy storage in a smaller footprint while reducing installation challenges associated with larger battery banks. Integrated Battery Management System (BMS) Modern lithium batteries include intelligent electronics that continuously monitor battery health, temperature, voltage, and overall system performance.   Comparing the Two Feature Lead-Acid Lithium (LiFePO₄) Upfront Cost Lower Higher Maintenance Regular (varies by type) Minimal Charging Speed Slower Faster Usable Capacity Lower Higher Cycle Life Shorter Longer Weight Heavier Lighter Expandability More limited Modular options available Monitoring Often external Integrated in many systems While both technologies remain viable, many new energy storage projects are moving toward lithium due to the long-term benefits in performance, maintenance, and overall ownership experience.   Is It Time to Upgrade? If your current battery bank is approaching the end of its service life, upgrading to lithium may provide an opportunity to modernize your entire energy storage system. Some signs it may be time to consider an upgrade include: Increasing battery maintenance Reduced runtime during outages Longer recharge times Expanding your solar system Planning to add new electrical loads such as EV charging or home electrification Replacing aging lead-acid batteries   An upgrade isn’t just about replacing batteries—it’s an opportunity to improve the overall performance and flexibility of your energy system.   Which Battery Is Right for Your Application? Lead-Acid May Be a Good Fit If: You’re replacing an existing lead-acid bank with similar requirements. Your system experiences relatively infrequent cycling. Upfront cost is the primary consideration. You’re comfortable performing regular battery maintenance. Lithium May Be the Better Choice If: You want a low-maintenance energy storage solution. Your system cycles daily. Space is limited. You’re installing a new backup power or solar system. You value scalability and future expansion. You want advanced monitoring and system intelligence.   Meeting the Needs of Today’s Energy Storage Customers Modern homeowners and businesses expect more from their energy storage systems than ever before.
