Charger Not following charge times

Post by jstone » Fri Jul 31, 2020 9:29 pm

Currently setup to mini grid. Grid connect at 24v after 2 minutes.
Charger enabled so it pre charges the battery due to low PV production.

Inverter charger settings:
Absorb time 2 hours at 28.8v
Float time 2 hours at 27.4V

(2) 12v 200ah Renogy batteries (They recommend the absorb, float voltages and times above)

Connect is happening, but the absorb times and float times are not followed. As soon as it reaches 28.8v it tapers off and then drops the grid.

See graph below.

check your battery protection settings on the inverter and HBX settings on the mate.

HBX is disabled.

Protection settings are default.

use specific for your battery, not the default ones. 48V(or how low you want to go) for low cut-out and over absorb (experiment with this, maybe equal with absorb will be fine) for cut-in. if you have high voltage protection then cut-out maybe the equalization voltage or what value you think will be high for your battery and cut-in higher than absorb voltage. Not sure if the battery protection settings might interfere with the charging settings, but I observed charging termination earlier in mini-grid and this could be the culprit.

Thanks for the reply. From my logic, I can't see my voltage hitting any protection limits. At this point, I guess I'm looking for specific settings from someone more knowledgable than me, because something about this system I'm missing, or there is some serious flaws in their logic programming. I am sure it's something that is about to smack me in the face, but I'm doing the dreaded first year battery damage by not letting this absorb properly.

See attached settings for inverter battery charging.

if you want to maximize your battery you should have the low battery cut out at 23V and try the cut-in voltage at 29.2 (just as a test to see if this is solving your problem).

something is triggering the cut-in. from what i know the mini-grid is just switching to grid once the trigger voltage is reach and then is not switching back.

Good point. Last night would have been a good time to adjust the cut out, as for no reason whatsoever, mini grid did not connect. Woke up to a 22.8v battery...not happy about that.

As far as the cut in voltage, the max is 28 I can set....so 29.2 isn't happening.

you could activate the HBX and see if it helps. i have mine enabled with mini grid and seems fine.

HBX was my original setting with mini grid and it wasn't coming off grid properly. Plus the manual states you can't use HBX with mini grid, but I agree it does work with it (which isn't surprising because the manual and the settings on this system contradict eachother quite often....some of the worst documentation I've ever seen in any technology system).

What I wish would happen with this system is, if a mode is disabled, all associated settings of voltages etc should be greyed out. I've seen competing settings between the CC and the Inverter...for example, when on grid, it will use the Absorb voltage of the CC, but the float voltage of the inverter.
