new fan coming on late in day minimal solar harvest

Postby Beechigby on Wed Dec 14, 2016 6:42 am

Just installed 2nd replacement fan (1st replacement installed in 2012) in MX60 (2009). Tested good
BUT, fan running on/off LATE in day with minimal solar input.
May I get a comment on that? I thought the fan was supposed to come on when the control was getting hot.
Also, I have replaced a few of these fans and they have all failed the same way. the 2 power wires corrode off the fan terminals.
any comments on imporving there longevity?
thanks

Hi Beech..,

There are several things that will cause the fan to run often;

1. Relatively high Vin (String voltage input), particularly with a 12 V or 24 V battery -- the greater the difference between the Vin and battery voltage, causes MPPT CCs to be a bit less efficient, and run warmen.
2. Relatively high ambient temperatures, where the CC is located.

Having high-ish string voltage with the CC in a warm environment will compound this situation.

If the CC gets warm, and reports that it is making some power from darkness, that would be a different issue.

Opinions, Vic
