Re: Post any forum strangeness here

Postby Vic on Thu Oct 29, 2009 9:11 am

I am curious about the frequent requirement to log in ... about once per day. And it is a bit curious that there does seem to be a mid-point where one is kinna logged in, but as noted above, at the point, when navigating to a topic, one gets logged out.

There is another situation, when one appears to be logged in, but upon beginning to make a post, it cannot be done until logging in.

EDIT: OK, so I needed to log-in again a few hours ago. No prob, and just now wanted to post a reply to a post, and it appeared that I was logged in ... my name appeared as being logged in, and the new posts were showing, BUT at the point of of clicking the "post Reply" button, needed to log-in again.

This is NOT a huge deal, but somehow I kinna take it personally (yes, insecurity). No other Fourm type site requires this level of security (?). Is this just an attempt ot keep undesirables out ? I do see that others are seeing this behavior, and do think that this site is very useful, and do respect the work of Outback Power, but am curious. However, it does convey a feeling that this site in not certain that I am really welcome here ... just a feeling. This level of authentication is by far the MOST STRINGENT on any site that I've ever encountered ... still curious ... Thanks VIc

ANY further updates on this behavior ?? (OH, that's right thre have been none).

This is the only Forum site which behaves this way. Still not huge, just inconvenient. About four or so months ago, this was not the behavior. Now, essentially, each visit one needs to log in again, eventho at the previous login, the 'remember me' (or whatever is says, exactly) box was checked

This must be intentional, and therefore a STUPID QUESTION, But what is the benefit to the Host to do this ? This site has been a great resource, but STILL am curious ... and so on.

All The Best, Vic

Yeah, Vic, nothing has changed for me either since the post I made on the problem last July. Don't take it personal, tho, as I suspect it's unintended by the host. Me.... I just stop by on occasion, instead of frequently.

OK, Thanks Phils

Somehow, down deep, I kinna take it personally (insecurity !). Seems that the site is not so certain that it wants ME here ... just the feeleing. Great site, tho, altho do not visit as often as B4.

Thanks, Vic

Was on the forum today with no problems, but tried to navigate to the main Outback site and got a warning from my AVG about a Java exploit.

Mainpage OK? I have actually found AVG to be pretty good..........

Thanks!

An observation, Using Firefox you get a display down lower left corner of where you are connecting to, it shows livesupport.outbackpower.com ? Does it on two different machines and is just as slow using IE

The site is kinna S L O W t hese days ... about 1.5 minutes per page served. Mabe the batteries are getting a bit low.

This site is a great resource, and do miss it when it is impacted. It seems to be one of the most fragile, and yet most exclusive of any site that I visit. When it is slow, if you make a second request for an action when it has not processed the previous, one can get the Forbidden dialogue, and one gets banned for a day or so ... I never have understood this ... Oh well ... Do miss the site when it has been hurt.

Vic

EDIT: Thanks for getting the site up and running again. Nice to catch up. VB

I second Vic's Observation. It took me over 7 minutes to post this. And that was only two screens, login and type this. I have to say I have never seen anything quite like this. Everything works just like it is in slow motion. Years ago I remember taiwanese PC component manufacturers operating websites off of 28.8 dialup connections. And sadly they were faster than this even with dozens of viewers at once. Something is definately wrong.

PM me if you are interested in someone donating hosting services for this forum. I own a hosting company and would be willing to do so. I have a linux and windows webserver sitting idle most of the day. and in a huge bandwidth rich datacenter no less.

Thanks,

Scott

It's the fact that you're a spammer.

Indeed, I was about to write almost exactly the same response yesterday, but I figured the posting would soon be removed. It hasn't, so it would seem Outback are still rather slow to remove spammers... Didn't we vote to give you (Julie) the permissions to do that ages ago? Even removing the signature files would be a start.
