Starting today, when I go to Active Topics in Quick links, I don't see anything newer than yesterday midday unless I login. Once I login, I see several new posts from today. I'm used to having to login to post, but not just to view posts.

If you don't log in, how would the forum know what was new since your last log in? There have been changes on the forum but I'm not sure this is one of 'em. Maybe that changed but I haven't noticed the issue you speak of here.

I'm not sure how it USED to work, but it always knew what I opened on my last visit, even though I only ever logged in when I wanted to post.

Mysterious....the workaround is just to stay logged in all the time.

I disagree. Log in while you are on the site and log out before you close the tab/window. Maybe I'm just old fashioned.... But other than two places I NEVER keep tabs/windows active. Those two sites are pretty cool - I have no worries. Many of you have one of 'em active, probably right now.

The HTTPS site only allows, last time I looked, up to ~50KB attachment size -- laughable! Maybe it will get fixed at some point -- the insecure site allows attachments at least up to 2MB.

You can post the larger attachments on the insecure site and then everybody can read and download them from the secure site.

OK, I'm hesitant to give more info here lest I be called names!
Firstly I believe the site is still hosted with GoDaddy ..............
So, the following info may fall on deaf ears...

Similar problem with solution...

Hello again, I contacted my server host to find out if they could check the log files for me and give them the info you supplied, within moments they not only checked the logs but also increased the memory limit and upload max size for the domain, I then checked and its all now working finally

Great news. If you don't mind checking, what is the PHP Info page showing for the value of memory_limit now? We weren't focusing on that setting in the earlier discussion, so I don't know if we know what the value was earlier. But that's just for curiosity's sake.

This "makes sense", because of the settings mentioned, memory_limit is the one has the best possibility for explaining "there was an HTTP 500 status when the attachment exceeded a certain size." Because PHP execution failed by bumping into the memory_limit, even though a post and a file upload of that size was permitted by plupload, PHP, and phpBB.

Thanks for the additional info. Crazy to think that if the value was actually 45MB before, that just a 1.2MB file had ended up being "too large." But could certainly be some other variables in play. Bottom line is, glad you got it solved!

I didn't understand any of "the following info", but maybe someone at OB will!
I'm just using the insecure site for now -- I hope they don't eliminate it before fixing the attachment size problem in the secure version.

Dang, it happened again. Posting to a thread with content, history and data it was an hour+ or so before I completed the draft response. Personally I had to do some tasks, chores etc. Then I was happy and the the SUBMIT. Then I was logged out and went to the login page. I was so pissed I walked away. I should've just back stepped the page back and cut and pasted but I killed it. I was pissed. I lost the cache.

Why is there such a short session time? Gosh, replying to a something here, does one have to do it off line and copy and paste? I don't think it is a browser issue... why only here?

Funny you mention that. I've started composing my posts in Text Edit after having lost many paragraphs a few times (unless it's just a one-line response which even I could probably remember!) It's easier to do offline for me -- I can set the font to 18 pt while I'm writing, for one thing  ...

I'm trying to add a 507kb attachment (screenshot) to a post and I get "http error". Anybody else having this issue?

Funny, when I first started to look at my new notifications this afternoon, I could not log in. Forum wasn't recognizing my password and when I tried the "I forgot my password" route, I get this weird certificate message that effectively prevented me from setting a new PW. But then for some reason that problem disappeared and login with my old password worked.

But now this attachment problem... :-k

Are you on the secure HTTPS site when trying to attach the file? That site has a much smaller limit on the size of attachments.

Yeah, I saw the other posts about this limit but hadn't encountered it yet. And now I'm finding it's impossible to log into the non https site. This sucks (pardon my French).

Who's the guy who complained about using the http site???

Just a few minutes ago I had trouble getting on the unsecure site also -- something I'd never seen before, a big GO BACK button! I do a lot of screenshot attachments, and I won't use the secure site until (or unless) they fix that size limit.

I had trouble logging onto the site just now, receiving a response of "The submitted form was invalid. Try submitting again." on each attempt. Clearing cookies and trying with a different browser from my usual one, Chrome rather than Firefox, didn't help. When I tried the "reset password" or "forgot password" link that asked for a registered email address, rather than sending an email it popped up another box asking for username & password again (different from the normal login page). Trying to log in there resulted in a generic error like "You do not have permission to access this page"

Reading this thread and seeing mention of manually forcing HTTPS, I thought I'd try that, entering "https://outbackpower.com/forum" into my URL bar directly. This gave a harmless mixed/insecure content warning (likely from inline image http://www.outbackpower.com/forum/outback.png not being referenced via HTTPS), but on trying to log in I suddenly got an invalid-certificate error, requiring clicking through several "Yes, I'm really sure I trust this site" type warnings from Firefox. The certificate being presented at that moment is/was apparently valid only for several hostnames under *.alpha.com, rather than outbackpower.com. Strange that this Alpha certificate didn't appear until trying to log in - maybe it's installed on a different web server that the form gets submitted to?

After clicking past all those warnings, though, the login did work correctly, and I was finally able to get on the site to post this. I don't know for certain whether forcing HTTPS really helped, or if it just happened to randomly work then, a few minutes after my earlier attempts.

Seems a common symptom. Invalid format error when logging into nonsense site. Can log into secure site and get redirected to nonsecure site. Some resources (icons) are slow to load.

I was unable to login to the unsecure forum site this morning. So I logged into the secure one, which worked fine.

Maybe the unsecure page is finally going away for good, which means we're going to be seeing a lot of VERY low-res attachments unless they get that fixed.

This is the largest file I can attach (45KB, the next one up at 61KB was rejected):

bar graph 4.jpg

Legible (barely), but not good!

And here's a 47KB version of Steven Bowler's beautiful shot of his GSLC at 1.9MB, which he posted on the unsecure site in the topic "Re: GS8048A Backup Mode Not Charging Batteries much, SOC declining", about 3/4 of the way down on the first page. A 57KB version was rejected on the secure site.

Steven Bowler 48KB.jpg

Maybe we could get used to this, but do we HAVE to?

I didn't think much about the change to a more secure site - in fact, I thought it might be desirable. Now however, with the benefit of hindsight, this old maxim comes to mind:

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

The sad part is, it's apparently easy to fix this problem (not for me, but any decent IT person). I guess OB has a lot on its plate these days, and this hasn't risen to the top of the heap yet.

I've also had the login problems others have reported here. I successfully logged in to the unsecure site from my Android yesterday morning but was unsuccessful on either site last night. This morning, I had no luck on either site from my Mac using Safari but finally made it work from Firefox to the secure address.
