Ethernet to Wifi Adapter for OpricsRE

Post by Clem Jonze » Sun May 03, 2015 3:14 pm

Aloha Forum!

My Off Grid Outback Flex 1 system lives in a "solar shed" about 75 feet from my home.

My final setup step is to get the Optics RE working. (have latest firmware, etc)

Because of the distance to my router, I need to setup an Ethernet to Wireless Adapter. (already tried a power line adapter...too far for a good signal)

I have good wireless signal to the solar shed area.

I'm sure there are others successfully using a wireless connection from the OpticsRE to WiFi Router.

Can anyone share a brand - model ect., that works for them - and/or any setup challenges - issues? Net Gear and TPlink appear to have some functional product lines.

Thanks in advance!

Looks like the Big Island contingent is active :) and I'm sure my neighbor, Dave will chime in as he recently did this.
I'm on an Apple Airport network so I just placed an airport express near my system, extending my network and it is working well.

Later this summer, I'm redoing my network with https://www.eero.com. Hoping for better coverage.

Aloha sodamo!

Using the airport express, what do you have your Mate3 Ethernet plugged into? Must be some kind of Ethernet to wifi adapter...

So far, the Flex 1 system is working really well. Just this last hurdle to get through.

I was reading Daves posts on his networking troubles, seemingly solved by a shorter Ethernet cable!

Chuck

Chuck
The Express extends my network wirelessly and has it's own ethernet port.I could use shorter cable, but only ones I had available were too short or the really long one from Outback. Eventually, I'll likely get one more suitable.

So far, I'm liking the OpticsRE, but it hasn't replaced my morning walk to monitor the system. Until i can trade up to the Flexmax CC's i won't be getting the solar data I want.

Aloha, Hey Chuck, in regards to my wireless network set up I have in my solar shed 120 ft from main house, the Mate 3 ethernet cat 5 cable connected to a wireless D-Link AC750 Dual band cloud router through one of its 4 Lan Ports. Then wireless connection to a Netgear WN2000RPT WiFi range extender in my guest house 60 ft from main house, first pressing the WPS connect button on Netgear extender then pushing the WPS connect button on the back of the D-Link router within a minute. Once this is done, on my computer in my house I click on the network now named dlink-A839-EXT and then simply type in the address bar 192.168.0.1 and it immediately shows my Optics RE main screen page with all my active solar activities listed in real time. Sure saves me a lot of time from having to go out to check on statistics. Hope this helps you, David H.

You don't sign in to the OpticsRE.com? If I type in the mate3 address, I get the screen of info, but it's not interactive like OpticsRE.

Aloha, hey David you are right I never have been able to log into optics RE website...couldn't figure that out, so I use the address 192.168.0.64 and see real time statistics and that is what I want for now. But never have had "control to change settings wirelessly" David H.

Aloha Guys!

Thanks for the setup input.

As you know, Roadrunner Internet by Time Warner is "on again off again". In an attempt to rectify, I recently purchased a new Motorolla Cable Modem and am going to give back the junk they supply to see if my signal becomes stable. I have good wifi signal at the shed from my existing router, but could not get my old netgear router to connect. (even using the WPS button as described, changing to static IP, etc)

Because we are pretty much running Apple computers these days, (Ipads and Iphones), I decided to drop the bucks and buy an Aiport Extreme and Airport Express.

Once Amazon delivers, (got to love that Prime), I'll use the express out in the shed.

Thanks for the tip on accessing via the IP address! I don't mind a walk to the shed...but the rain lately, plus monitoring the system while we are on the mainland and at work will be fun!

Aloha,

Chuck
