Planned OPTICS RE Maintenance - Wednesday February 14, 08:00

Postby Bryce Millet on Mon Feb 12, 2018 9:53 am

Maintenance Notification

We will be performing updates on our servers this Wednesday, 02/14 at 8:00 AM PST (16:00 UTC). This is a regular maintenance that requires taking various services offline for one to two hours. Loss of connectivity will occur for part of the update, but should be minimal. Thank you in advance for your patience while we make improvements to OPTICS RE!

3.7.2 Update List:

Improvements
Profile Management: It is now possible to delete a Profile, Site, or System if there are multiple profile administrators assigned to a profile. It is no longer necessary to remove other profile administrators.
Graphing: Added support for 36V battery color health.
Graphing: Tool-tip formatting has been adjusted for easier reading at a glance.
Graphing: Bar graph colors have been modified to be more consistent between tabs that show similar information.
Dashboard: A device needs attention indicator has been added to the dashboard page. The indicator will appear on the navigation element to the device map if Inverter model needs to be selected, firmware version needs to be updated to work with Optics, etc.
Server improvements:: A number of smaller improvements have been made to back end services.
Patch Notes:: A small style change has been made to make individual sections more distinct.

Bug Fixes
Graphing: Fixed an issue that would sometimes cause the load value for midnight to be ignored and discarded.
Device Map: Fixed an issue that prevented Aux Control from appearing in charge controller settings.
System Status: Fixed an issue that was preventing the status from showing "Right Now You Are... producing" under certain circumstances.
Email Alerts: Fixed an issue that sometimes caused an alert to be emailed more than once.
Site Time Zone: Fixed an issue that prevented all time zones from appearing for the Mate3S.
RoseWater Systems: The Device Map controls are now enabled if the Mate3 is responsive, but other components of the system are not. Previously, controls would be disabled if all components of the system were not responding.

Appreciate the info. Glad to see you're tweaking and improving things.

Mine just came back up.

Quick bit of feedback--the new color for "To Grid" is a little hard to distinguish from the "Solar" color--at least on my iMac display right now (I'm on Windows Firefox though, using Bootcamp). Keep in mind that some of your users may be color blind, too, so ideally these bars should be distinguishable for them as well.

The previous "To Grid" light green was a better choice. If you want to experiment with colors, why not try an orange? Something like #ff6633 (255, 102, 51).

Just 2-cents worth from an experienced web UX designer.

(a good test for colorblind users is at https://www.toptal.com/designers/colorfilter)

I can see my site again after the maintenance, but the values are not changing. The site said that my panels were making 820 watts all night. Any ideas how to fix this?

Hi James,

If you were to add your Optics site name to your forum profile, we could take a look.

Hi Henrik,

I had another user report something similar this morning. Here's what I told him. I'm pretty sure that we're looking at the same issue.

I'm going to take a stab at what's going on:

1) The initial interruption is related to our planned/announced maintenance and software upgrade yesterday, February 14th.

2) It appears as if your Mate3 has successfully reconnected after the interruption . [In your case, that's probably due to the 24-hour auto-reboot).

3) During the time of the interruption, the Mate3 is programmed to write data to a "Replay" file (.rpy) on the SD card if it is inserted and has space available. Do you see such a file?

4) The Mate3 team is working on a new firmware release. In that upcoming version, fixes have been added to make the .rpy upload upon reconnection more robust. We have found some conditions where the upload failed. It is possible that that has happened with your system.

I hope that this helps to clarify.

So... that probably explains the gap and it looks like things are working again. I also see that you're using Mate3 firmware 3.15.0. We've added a number of improvements in the Mate3 since that version - in particular to improve reconnection after an interruption and the way (and reduced need for) the auto-reboot functionality. That can be found here: http://outbackpower.com/catalogs-collat ... ory_id=475

Hope that helps.

This may be why mine still has this problem. I haven't rebooted the Mate, I'll try it when I get home.

The card slot was damaged when I received it and I had to take the card out so that it would run.

I had just installed all of this after a poorly grounded phone line had let lightning into my house and took out my old system and just ran out of time to follow up on the problem.

I'll see if I can fix the slot. If not, what do I have to go through to get it repaired?

OpticsRE remains off line after 2/14/18 Maintenance. Is there a way to turn off automatic updates? I'll have to drive 10hours and hike 2hours to this remote site, if your going to tell me to un-plug the Axs port to reset it!

Pretty sure the update discussed was internal to Outback, not local firmware. I believe Mate 3 and Axs port updates have to been done manually, but someone will correct if I’m mistaken.

Sodamo,

I thought the update was for the OpticRe site only, but noted that at my specific location (on 2/14/18), that it updated the firmware to my charge controller. There is a note in the OpticsRE 'Event History" that states this. So, what did the OpticsRE updates cover and to what extent? Is there a way to stop any automatic updates to my equipment?

I’ll be curious to read OB response. My CCs are 3.3 and no indication of change in Event History. (To be honest, I’m not crazy about Event History) My recollection was MX60 couldn’t be firmware upgraded except at OB.
Is your system set to auto reboot?

The OpticsRE update caused no new firmware to be loaded to any remove devices. The event log entry you're referring to is a "redetection" of the firmware version after the outage. We cannot make automatic updates to your equipment through Optics. The only change was on the server, in the cloud.

While Optics is not responding, your controller cannot reach Optics. The controller is programmed to (and should) automatically reconnect to Optics once Optics is again available. We have seen cases in the past where this did not occur automatically. When that happens, the remedy is to power-cycle the controller by removing its power (the cable to the hub), waiting about 10 seconds and then plugging it back in.

Here are a few knowledge base articles which may be useful:

https://opticsre.uservoice.com/knowledg ... nnectivity
https://opticsre.uservoice.com/knowledg ... is-offline

There are two things you could have considered earlier (and should consider now) to help with this issue in the future:

1) You're running controller firmware 3.15.0. There's a later patch, 3.15.1 available here: http://outbackpower.com/catalogs-collat ... ory_id=475. I don't know the actual planned release date, but there's another AXS-port release coming - probably in the next four weeks - 3.17.0 with additional fixes (primarily for standards compliance). When you're at the site, you might consider upgrading.

2) If you look in Optics' device map, select the controller and then the "Connectivity" tab, there's an "Auto-Reboot Interval" which you can set. That will cause the controller to automatically reboot after that period. Had that been set now, that probably would have caused the AXS-Port to right itself in this case. You can (and should) set it before visiting the site. It won't take effect until the device starts communicating again with Optics.

Apologies for the inconvenience. Hope that's of some help.

I know this sounds like a stupid question... but there's really no way of a 1kWh load for those time periods.

We have had a few reports of unexpected (though much larger) load indications.

Here's something else I'd be interested in having you try: if you reset the gateway (you can do that through Optics: Device Map, Mate3, Status tab, "Reset Gateway" button), does the problem persist or does it correct itself?

Bonus tip: I see that your Mate3 is running firmware level 3.15.0. 3.15.5 (found here: http://outbackpower.com/catalogs-collat ... ory_id=475) has much improved connectivity and reconnection vs. 3.15.0. You might wish to consider upgrading at your convenience. (I don't believe that that is related to what you reported, however).
