Old System. Upgrade to OpticsRE?

Postby rbrown3rd on Sat Jul 08, 2017 8:13 am

My system is 10 years old and has the original Mate. What would be the process, hardware upgrades, etc., for me to upgrade to OpticsRE monitoring?

I did exactly what you're considering in August, 2016. All I had to do was obtain a Mate3. Once I had it I could monitor and control my GVFX's, but only monitor my MX60. Only the Flexmax charge controllers can be remotely controlled using OPTICSRE. Not really a big drawback for me since it's my home system and my MX60 is mounted in our attached garage.

This year I added more PV modules and an FM80 for them. This new charge controller is remotely controllable through OPTICSRE, but my MX60 is still monitor-only. However the MATE3 has a feature called float coordination that insures that when one or the other CC goes into float, the other does also.

Check out this thread I started before deciding to upgrade:

The other alternative for you is to get an AXS Port to replace your Mate. My understanding is it allows even more flexibility in control and monitoring, but I'm not really familiar with it. Perhaps someone who is will chime in.

Thanks. So, if I read your post and the other thread correctly, it's pretty much plug and play. I would get a Mate 3, replace my Mate with it, then add and configure OpticsRE. I am also considering adding some additional panels which would add another inverter and charge controller in my garage.
