IBR 3 175 LI wiring and breakers?

Post by Jpro556 » Sat Mar 23, 2019 6:38 pm

Hi,

Does Outback have a wiring diagram with breakers and such for the IBR 3 175 LI?

The SimpliPhi batteries are rated at 34ADC continuous, but they can surge to 60ADC.

6 batteries can support a 16kw Radian surge power putting out roughly 54ADC each, but that adds up to 324ADC total parallel amps.
That would trip a single 175ADC breaker in the IBR 3.

How does this work?

Thanks,
Jason

Are you referring to the IBR-3-48-175-LI three tier battery rack designed for the RE / NC series battery?

The SimpliPhi 3.5 would be a very tight fit in the rack, and since the IBR-3 assumes each tray will hold a 48V battery bank (4 12V monoblocks wired in series) the stock wiring scheme would accommodate one SimpliPhi per tier. You could wire two SimpliPhi batteries in parallel on each tier by adding bus bars for the connections.

Each tier has it's own 175A disconnect. All three tiers are wired in parallel with a single battery cable feed to the inverter.

The breakers (in any system) are designed to protect the wiring, not the equipment. If you plan on supporting a full-load drain off the batteries of 60A/each for 10 minutes 0000 cable will be required. There may be 360A DC breakers available for the load side, but I've never seen one, let alone wanted to lay out the $$$$$$$$$ for one.

Raysun,

Actually, Outback has an IBR3 wired to hold 6 lithium batteries, it gets the LI designation. As I'm looking at how to wire up 6 SimpliPhi 3.5's, I'm suddenly wondering how this bank would support a Radian surge of 12kw or 16kw? First question is the breakers, which if the lithium model of IBR-3 is wired the same, then each shelf would have a 175ADC breaker, which is good.

BUT, then what size cable needs to be used to support a max surge out of the batteries of 350Adc from those three shelves of batteries in parallel? 4/0 only supports like 250ADC. Unless, 10 and 30 minute surge currents of 350 ADC are no big deal to a 4/0 inverter cable??

Well, one question answered. I just realized that the Radian 8048 was anticipated to have (2) DC+ cables and (2) DC- cables coming in from the batteries.

So now I'm just curious how the IBR3-175-LI is setup. If all three shelves are combined after their 175 breakers, then I guess dual 4/0 cables for + and - would work.

Yes, 0000 would be undersized for  360A service, my bad. It would take something like 500 AWG.

Just the same, the SimpliPhi batteries aren't going to deliver that much current for more than a few minutes. It would be better to think in terms of their continuous rating.

The original IBR-3 has all three banks wired in parallel after the cutoffs.

See page 2 of the IBR-3 Quick Start Guide http://www.outbackpower.com/downloads/d ... br_qsg.pdf.

The positives from each shelf double up on the battery side of the 175A breaker. The negatives all parallel on the negative bus plate.
