My RE system: flex power one 3kw. (looks like they might be renogy) 12v 100amh batteries(except for numbers everything in chinese) 9x 270watt 30V 9amp panels also generic. System was gifted. upgrading everything to Outback in 1 weeks.

So 2pm hot and bright and I am pulling in 900watts with 12 270 watt panels. This cant be right. Using 100feet of 8 gauge. But this seems low

What is the battery charger doing? Is in Absorb, Float?

absorb but now its at 900 and its with light cloud cover

The charge controller is only going to harvest what's needed to charge the battery and service loads. During Absorb, especially in the latter time of the phase, the current requirement declines significantly.

Turn on some load, and you should see the solar harvest increase.

I take it that float means it wont utilze much just enough to keep batteries topped up, now its back at float and at 700 and sunny, I still think something funny going on. guess only way to know is get on rood now and test all the circuit breakers one by one.

I really cant thank you enough, for all my stupid questions. Until I get this set up for 240, really wont have much load on it, then ac during day

You could go measure stuff on the roof, but I doubt it's going to show you much - especially relative to spending some time understanding the battery charge cycle and the charge controller's role in it.

If the battery is at Float, then the controller considers it fully charged, and is only going to provide as much charge as is needed to keep the battery full. That's what "controller" in "charge controller" implies.

For example, my array is 6,000 watts. My two charge controllers rarely, if ever, harvest that much power. Why? Is my array defective somehow? Not in the least. The answer is simply my system rarely demands that much power. When my battery starts charging at 7AM the sun is low in the sky and not providing sufficient power during the Bulk phase to drive the array to maximum. By about 9:30, with the sun much higher in the sky, the battery is to the point the charge cycle switches from Bulk to Absorb, and power demands start steadily declining. By about 11:30 the battery is in Float, and charging demand is reduced to about 100 Watts. Unless I'm running some sort of house load, the charge controllers have no need to harvest more than that. My array is not defective, it's just that its potential is not needed.

Yes, most days in the afternoon, if I'm up to fiddling, I'll pump water from one of my storage tanks to the other, just so some of those photons won't have traveled 93 million miles just to die in vain.
