Dual Mate on a sysyem

Post by raysun » Thu May 07, 2020 9:03 am

Can two Mate3s units be plugged into a single system?

Though there are two Mate ports on a Hub, I dont recall this feature working with the Mate3.

Hub manual says it is inactive and should not be used.

That's my impression too.

I noticed another post where someone was reporting strange behavior on a system with two Mate3s on it, and was wondering how that was even functioning.

They must be describing two separate systems, I guess.

Yes, only one MATE3S per system.

Just confirming I wasn't crazy. Well, in this way, that is.

It'd be interesting if someone with a Hub10 could probe its "2nd Mate" port with a scope, pins 3 & 6 (measured to pin-2 ground) to see if any data is being sent out on that port at all, which would determine whether a future Mate update could be enough to allow connecting one there, or the Hub would need new firmware as well. I would try it, but only have a Hub4 available, which omits this jack.

The Mate is the bus master for all communications over Outback's proprietary serial bus, responsible for gathering data from all components as well as synchronizing shared data, such as RTS battery temperature and the time-of-day clock. This is why a Hub shows no LED activity without a Mate connected. The Hub is basically a serial multiplexor/port-selector, with extra out-of-band connections for phase sync between inverters. An FX, CC, FNDC, or Hub will never transmit any data unsolicited, but only in response to periodic queries from the Mate, and the protocol is such that it's often necessary to observe the queries in order to interpret responses. Before realizing this, I thought it might be possible to connect a second Mate in parallel to only pins 1,2,3 (+22V power, GND, Hub->Mate TX) for passive monitoring only, leaving Pin 6 disconnected to avoid conflicting transmissions, but this won't work because a Mate expects to originate all bus transactions itself. A modified version of jorticus' pyMate code could possibly copy useful data (Google that project name for some interesting tidbits), but would need two available serial ports to watch both TX and RX, and for that limited use case you might as well just plug into the Mate's officially supported serial, USB or Ethernet connections.

Just curious, were you going somewhere with this question? Trying to do something?

Yea. It's weird. Our life there in the Ka'u boonies have changed, absolutely zero. Well that's not true. We have younger friends checking in, and insisting on doing our grocery shopping for us.
