Shorted input?

Postby Shadow_Storm56 on Thu Sep 13, 2018 3:10 pm

Not sure how but one of my charge controllers now has a shorted input. The PV + to PV - is direct short, I went in to check on power output and stuff in my shop and the one was reading 1v so I checked it over and turned off the solar input and the switch flashed like there was a short, checked it out and sure enough the controller is shorting the panels. Not sure how this happend and how it did not cause a funny smell or somthing obvious with all that power shorted out but it didn't. Anyone have this happen before? Any clue what it means or why it would happen? How to fix it? Thanks

Please provide more details about your PV array. Better yet add the PV array details to your profile.

If you remove the PV wires and turn the controller on what does IN voltage read vs the OUT?

Thanks,

Out is battery voltage, in is 0 with wires disconnected. The array is fine it's running on an ok backup controller right now but I took a meter and there is no resistance between the Pv plus and -. I have an identical one and if I remove the input wires on that as well and do the same test there is no connection. I'll put stuff on my profile later but it's a 1500w array and a 48v battery bank.

It sounds like the FETs are shorted. You can use this link to create a support case with OutBack to get the controller repaired.

I'm glad you have a backup controller. At this point, it is hard to say why the other controller shorted out.

Backup parts help alot. I shuffled it around so the only thing offline is my smallest array.
