System periodically shuts down and restarts

Post by Dan E » Tue Mar 17, 2020 9:22 am

I have FLEXPower TWO FXR system, with battery backup. It is about 8 or 9 years old.

About once a day, at random times, the entire system, including grid power, completely shuts down. About 10 seconds later it restarts. There are no error codes, but one unit contains 2 warnings:

1) Remote Temperature Sensor (RTS) warning light.
2) airtemp = 255

I replaced the RTS cable, twice, but the warning persists. The system showed no performance problems, otherwise. I have also replaced the cooling fans a few times over the years.

There have been no other electronic problems with the system until a few months ago, when squirrels chewed through one of the collector wires, causing a ground fault. An electrician repaired the wire, and the ground fault problem disappeared.

Since then, the system ran great until about 2 weeks ago, when it started resetting.

Any help would be appreciated.

Dan

Hi Dan, have you tried plugging the RTS into a CC or the other inverter? Which unit is having the warning?

Yes. I tried plugging the new sensors into both units. No matter what I tried, the warning light on one unit continued to flash.

Hi Dan,

I would recommend calling OB support as likely there is a repair required. I looked closer at your warnings, the RTS warning is related to the battery temp sensor but he airtemp warning is related to the air temperature in the inverter.

Thanks. The first thing I checked when I saw the airtemp warning was to check the temperature of the inverters. Both are only slightly warm, so something is happening besides over-heating. I will contact support.

Dan, do you recall hearing the fans making a high-pitched whine, which could indicate a fan bearing going out? If one of your fans stopped that could cause over-temps. Does the inverter run quieter now than you recall?

I ask, because the fan(s) in my GS4048 have started doing that, and I'm wondering if I should proactively replace them or just trust that if they stop and over-temp, the GS4048 will safely shut down before damage is caused.

I removed the covers, and the fans seem to be fine. They run smooth, and keep the units at a reasonable temperature, even in the heat of the day.

I am having a difficult time reaching Outback Customer Support. I have left a "call-back" message, twice, and no response. Is this normal?

Hi Dan, I expect some of the delay has been related to that area being hit hard with COVID-19. May be better to try email.
