Need help/advice with monitoring my system

Postby rcteel5 on Thu Nov 08, 2018 6:46 am

I have spent the last 20 minutes searching the Off Grid forum for an answer to my question, without success. I hope the forum experts can help.

I have an off-grid 48v. system (Outback FM80 controller, Magnasine 4448 inverter, 3200w of panels. 12kw generator). The system is housed in it's own building about 150 feet from our house. There is no cell coverage in the system building. I want to be able to monitor basic system status from the house. What is the best way to do that?

You could monitor the FM80 if you supplied Internet access to your outbuilding, but you would also have to obtain an Outback Mate3 device. To get Web Access out there (assuming you already have it in your house) you could use an ethernet bridge, like these: https://www.cnet.com/news/top-five-powe ... fails-you/ . This would be easier than pulling a CAT5e cable out there... but even with adding these and a Mate3 you still wouldn't be able to monitor your Magnasine inverter status using Outback monitoring equipment.

Thank you, Mike. When I installed the solar power system, I ran an 8 wire low voltage cable from the shed thinking I might want to run an alarm system to the house (fire and intruder). I was thinking of trying to use that to wire to the Mate2 or Make3 as a last resort. Thanks for the other idea.

You can monitor the inverter as well.

Check out the link.
