GS 4048A

Post by hiletroy » Fri Jun 26, 2020 11:50 am

Apologies if this is not the best place to post...I'm a forum noob.

I have a grid tied Radian GS4048A which shut down on an OverTemp active fault, now I can't get power to pass through to the critical load panel. I get an AC short out active fault, and inverter won't stay on. It trips to fault automatically.

I have reset firmware, turned breakers off on critical load panel to see if any breakers trip the default, but it goes to active fault no matter what I do. I suppose I could do a factory reset, but i hesitate as I don't know if that would do the trick. I have the bypass breaker on now so I can power everything.

My installer pretty much abandoned me, and I opened a case with outback a week ago, and no call back (could be I'm the homeowner and not the installer, and they don't want to deal with dummies like me) . :-)

Anyway, suggestions as to what the best course of action is? I l know they are super busy, but I'm at two weeks down and wife is starting to get a little annoyed with me.

Suggestions? Or shall I just be patient and wait for a call? I don't know what tech response time is like.

Kinda hard to diagnose from the forum and it sounds like you've tried everything you can. Turning off the breakers from the inverter to your critical loads and still getting a fault definitely points to a problem inside the inverter. If it had been working fine and then suddenly faulted, maybe it's toast? On the bright side, if it's less than 5 years old it'll be under warranty.

Good luck.

It is possible it is an internal to the inverter as you first got the over temp error and now AC shorted error. However, if you are comfortable working on the system you could disconnect the AC output wires from the inverter itself. Look at the current installation manual figures 13 and 17 for where the terminal block is and the associated text.

This would definitely define if the short is internal to the inverter or somewhere in the wiring.

Another possibility is arc fault somewhere in your critical load system. I had a customer that got an AC Output Shorted error on a FLEXPower 2 that eventually turned out to be an arc fault. The inverter shutdown before the breaker ever tripped. It was a piece of bare 14/2 Romex (white) that was outside. The clue was the end of the white insulation was black.
