Re: Generator considerations

What about sine wave considerations with a generator and the 8048? Some generators seem to handle sensitive electronics better than others with ratings such as "Total Harmonic Disruption". If I get a generator with a THD of <8% rating, can that damage my Radian? If not the Radian to worry about, do...

Re: Looking for: system designer

I don't think so. Its useful to be able to disconnect each module independently. (Such as, have one 4kW module servicing the 120v critical loads, while the other runs the rest, and participates in 240V service. Should a module fail, or need to be taken out of service, the other could still run.) Ea...

Re: Differentiating between Grid and Gen Set sources

What I really want is a device that connects to the Outback system hub and then lets OpticsRE know which source is providing power, so that it can, in turn, generate COMPLETE summaries/reports. If this device does not exist, Outback Power should design it. New hardware and software cost money. Can ...

Question: are my two 175amp DC breakers SUPPOSED to be tied together? I can currently move the one-pole breakers independtely of the other.
Yes, keep the tied together with the shorting plate. It is the standard implementation and is shown in the GSLC manual.

@ fcwlp: your comment around running my two current pairs of positive and negative cables to the new bank: where Simpliphi recommends running the batteries in parallel, what I also ordered was a 1,000amp bus bar to connect the 6 batteries to. So would you recommend just running both sets of cables ...

When the grid goes out, my 2 grid tied Sunnyboy inverters cut off production to the grid automatically,
Do they still supply power the next day or do they have to have some grid input initially to activate this function?

Do you know what GIP (Grid Interface Protection) file is loaded in the Radian? Default is the IEEE, but I think CA has a their own. Read up on GIP in both the Radian and Mate3s manuals.

Re: Environmental extreme heat test in progress

I do not think this is an ambient heat-related issue, but more due to grid conditions making it impossible for the inverters to push power into the grid. It goes back to pss's earlier post in this thread, where he referred to this app note: http://outbackpower.com/downloads/docum ... p_note.pdf, wh...

Re: AC Coupling in general to grid tied inverters

It has been done and OutBack supports. Check the OutBack app note at http://outbackpower.com/downloads/documents/appnotes/ac_coupling_radian.pdf Shouldn't ANY grid tied inverter be tricked into thinking the grid is present when a battery inverter turns on and supplies AC to the home? There will be a...

@pss, I have been following your testing. We are supposed to be hitting 100F from 8/14 (today) thru Monday (8/17) at 5,000+ feet in AZ and I expect you will be to in CA. On three grid tie systems that I monitor, I have not seen the described issue. Systems are: 1) Radian, 2 FM80s, 1,100 AH FLA, 6,30...

Re: Differentiating between Grid and Gen Set sources

Anybody aware of any device that can be added to systems of 3648s to tell them (and OpticsRe) whether the input power is coming from the grid or gen set? I understand from your system description that you have 83 of these 3648 systems. Two options that I can think of are: 1) In OpticsRE set the "Gr...

Update: fcwlp, you are 100% correct! The picture (not the schematic) clearly shows that both positives of the 2 banks are connected to the plate. So it is one bank. The installer did the battery connection right.

Re: Can I use a PSX-240 Autotransformer to step up to run a well pump?

Thanks all. These were super helpful comments. I found more specs on my backup system here (https://www.solar-electric.com/lib/wind ... eet_na.pdf) and from what I can tell, during backup power situations I should be able to get 5000 VA, with a max of 7600 VA for 10 seconds. The battery (LG Chem RE...

Re: Looking for: system designer

Looking at the schematic for the original system, the designer did you no favors, IMO. The Radian consists of two inverter modules, each with a separate set of battery cables. However, Outback specifies they be powered from a single battery. The two-battery design in the schematic is not a supporte...

Welcome, I assume your "bunch of panels" are split into two groups each connected to one of the FM80s. Also, while it seems obvious, make sure they are both progra...

Re: Can I use a PSX-240 Autotransformer to step up to run a well pump?

Before considering a transformer of any type, you need to do some design analysis. 1) How much does your well pump draw when running? 2) What is the starting amps for the well pump? 3) What is the VA capability of your present inverter for both steady state and surge? 4) Can the LG Chem RESU 10H SEG...

Re: Mate3 not recognizing new Flexmax 100

I was looking at the manual and it states the FM100 is not compatible with the Mate, Mate2, or Mate3. The Mate3s is required. The manual says on pg. 7, "This product is not intended for use with the previous MATE, MATE2, or MATE3 products." So it all depends on the meaning of "intended." Given that...

With OpticsRE, go to inverter and select AC Input tab. In the first section you should have: - Charger operating mode - On - AC Input Select Priority - Grid - Charger AC Input Limit - what your batteries can handle. For my grid-tie customers, I will sometimes reduce this value in summer to minimize ...

One very annoying thing is the voltage setting for the Mate 3s AGS start up/shut down is that the incremental changes are in 0.4 volts. Already brought this to the Outback tech supports attention. An option to consider for starting the generator based on a minimum voltage would be to use the relay ...

Thanks for the heads up. I was still using the 2014 Operator's manual. Outback moved most of the "Power Save" section from the 2014 Operator's manual to the 2017 Installation manual.
