Re: absorption time and FNDC SOC data

I'll take a reading tonight and post it here--be best to wait until I"m no longer selling power and the batteries have had a chance to settle down from today's recharge.

absorption time and FNDC SOC data

I've got a modest 48V 428 A.H. battery bank composed of 8 Rolls-Surette S550 batteries connected to a Flexpower 8048a system. When recharging the bank, the Rolls manual indicates that once the bank reaches approximately 80% state of charge that the remaining 20% recharge happens in the absorption ph...

Re: maintenance for grid tied backed up systems

Duh! Of course...I can just go to my MATE3s and tell the inverter to "drop" the grid source. For some reason I was thinking I needed to disconnect the whole house from the grid. I may give that a try tonight. Do you have the system in "backup" mode when you do that? Is there a quick blip in the powe...

Re: maintenance for grid tied backed up systems

The only way I could figure out how to discharge the battery bank with my system was to disconnect the grid. But that tends to make everyone else in the house grouchy because it leaves only a few essential circuits powered. And if I do it overnight while the family's asleep it only draws down the ba...

Re: maintenance for grid tied backed up systems

At 11 years of service you're doing awfully well. Say more about your discharge routine? What mode is your inverter in? You stay grid tied? Is it during the day when PV is producing or at night? BTW, I was just in Lakewood visiting family and we drove along the Lake on our way to visit my brother in...

Re: maintenance for grid tied backed up systems

I have grid-tie with battery back up, Rolls FLA, not AGM, but one of their techs. told me the batteries should be discharged to roughly 70% and recharged every month or so to optimize battery life. Not sure if this applies to AGM but in FLA stratification of the electrolyte can become an issue if th...

Re: grid tie with battery backup--how much daily absorption?

Did some checking last night and it appears that the system draws 0.1 amp while idling at night. Figure roughly 10 hours in that state, so 1 amp hour removed from the battery bank overnight. This morning it was in MPPT bulk for about an hour and a half. When I checked toward the end of that phase, t...

Re: grid tie with battery backup--how much daily absorption?

Thanks for the video. I'll have to watch mine one morning. So the flashing green doesn't last for more than a few minutes. I'm sure in the past I've seen the blinking green during the day (not necessarily first thing in the morning) but it's no longer doing that. Same with the flashing bold SOC indi...

Re: grid tie with battery backup--how much daily absorption?

The documentation says once parameters are met the top light blinks green until a new discharge cycle begins. Switching directly to GT Mode I wouldn't think counts as a "discharge cycle." And previously I'm sure I saw that green top light on by itself on the FNDC and the "flashing bold" SOC % on the...

Re: grid tie with battery backup--how much daily absorption?

I changed my FNDC settings so that "charged time" is now 30 minutes. Both Flexmaxes are set to absorb for 1 hour. This morning I saw that one of the Flexmaxes stayed in Absorb for 28 minutes, the other 13 minutes. I'm thinking that's because the FNDC "charged voltage" is set to 58.4, while Absorb vo...

Re: grid tie with battery backup--how much daily absorption?

Hmmm. I have my FNDC charged parameter for time set to 2 minutes. But doesn't that just determine the amount of time that needs to pass at the "charged" voltage for the FNDC to consider charge parameters have been met? What I'm wondering about is the absorb time setting in the Flexmax CC--won't that...

grid tie with battery backup--how much daily absorption?

I have a modest 430 AH FLA battery bank in my grid-tie system, and it's rarely discharged other than maybe an amp hour or two each night (whatever the power consumption is of the idle inverter, FNDC, and MATE3S). What should I set the absorption time to on the charge controllers? Right now I have it...

Re: equalize with 2 FlexMax 80s?

Total failure again. Tried every variation I could come up with and I cannot get the charge controllers to stabilize at the correct voltage. No matter what, whenever they're in EQ mode and approach the target voltage the array current keeps swinging wildly and voltage swings also from about 56 to 62...

Re: equalize with 2 FlexMax 80s?

I'm trying a new approach this morning. Shortly after the inverters woke up, and they were in MPPT Bulk Mode, I put both in EQ and figure maybe I can get a 2-hour EQ in before the high-productivity hours later in the day. Wondering if the system will hold off on selling until the EQ is over. If not,...

Re: equalize with 2 FlexMax 80s?

What was the EQ voltage target? 62.4 But the first time I tried it I had sell at 60 and the charge controllers just seemed really confused about the situation. I also tried bumping sell up slowly bit by bit to see if it would stabilize but the current readings in the CCs kept jumping around eventua...

equalize with 2 FlexMax 80s?

I just tried tried to perform my first battery equalization and it didn't go so well. I have 2 FlexMax 80s and a Radian 8048A, grid-tie with battery backup. Normally during the day the two charge controllers are working in tamden, cranking out maximum power at float voltage and selling excess to the...

Great. In the meantime I'll just keep a close eye on it. Looks like a simple reboot clears everything up.

Re: FM80 PV= Series or Parallel

I have 305W panels with about the same Voc as yours and am using FM80's also. Mine are wired in series with 3 panels per string. One big advantage is that the higher voltage allows you to carry less current in your wiring, which can save money and makes it easier to minimize voltage drop over distan...

Looks like things are back to normal this morning after the reboot yesterday.

What do you make of that insane amount of activity the past two days, though? Firmware bugs? What triggers the behavior?

Re: more overnight weird behavior

No beta testing yet, they aren't ready for it. I just checked to be sure and it looks like I still have the latest firmware from last Januaray, 1.2.1.

Did you look at the event log? What do you make of all that activity in such a short timespan?

more overnight weird behavior

For the second straight morning it looks my MATE3s is totally whacked out again--massive amount of activity logged overnight (over 6000 entries in Optics Event History since midnight), most of which makes little sense to me (attached). Looks like almost all this activity is attributed to one (or bot...

strange behavior overnight

Yesterday I checked on my Radian system (with MATE3s) and found that the Mate's homescreen was looking odd (mostly blank except for the top line of information). I unplugged it then plugged it back in, and it looked fine. But I couldn't get my system to sell back to the grid, even after charge param...

Re: My Outback system @ 2 years of age

How close to the ocean are you? Curious if the salt air can ever cause corrosion issues on the corrugated metal. What did you do to seal that hole where the cabling penetrates the roof? Maybe that's not critical given that it's just covering a shipping container. Never been to Hawaii--like to go som...
