Heat Wave, Radian's, CC's, Panels Zero Output UGH!

I pretty much understand my system and it's almost utility like behavior, but I wanted to share with the forum the first heat wave related adverse behavior of the season since many users are relatively new and may be going into their first summer with PV and batteries. My system is set up as GRID TI...

Re: Need help choosing the right cable and breaker btwn Batts and Inverter

Not to be an ah on this forum, but your charge controller is programmed directly and is not an Outback Power component and does not communicate with Outback Power equipment, hubs, Mate 3S or inverter. I think it is way more appropriate for you to be asking this question on the Midnite Solar forum, n...

Re: Arrays two directions on same charge controller

Charging a battery means moving anions off of the positive pole (anode) and back into solution and cations off the negative pole or cathode. Once this is complete, the specific gravity of the battery electrolyte is high. The process physically completes and the battery is restored to full potential ...

Re: Batteries not holding charge all of a sudden

If you really want to configure a radian 8048a for full use, then a battery bank 1200 to 1500 amp hours and the panels and chargers to charge that bank. I have 8300 watts of pv, 900 amp battery bank and a nighttime load of 2500 watts. So my bank is 40k watts, flooded Batts, I usually draw off 10 - 1...

Re: Batteries not holding charge all of a sudden

All the cells of a battery should be like identical triplets and close looking siblings of the other batteries in the string.

Re: Batteries not holding charge all of a sudden

So the batteries are fully charged to the absorb level, then go to float level, then when there is no pv and no load on the batteries, the voltage quickly drops to 39 within 15 minutes. The only possible explanations are someone is diluting your electrolyte which is highly unlikely or there is a loa...

Re: Powering up 8048A without battery

Mike, as an older parent I have found that directing my older children to do the physical diy tasks works pretty well. I have been reading this thread. Very unfortunate. I think when an installer abandons you whether or not the system is working as designed or not, it is most important that the dail...

Re: Batteries not holding charge all of a sudden

Okay, I'm gonna assume that before you made this post, you opened up the caps, made sure the electrolyte level was up to the correct fill level and even checked the specific gravity of all the cells with the battery fully charged and no loads correct?

Re: Arrays two directions on same charge controller

I'm sorry, but it is my understanding that DC power from a panel is passed through a charge controller where the voltage and amperage are optimized to charge the batteries at all times and to even keep them charged when a load is present. There are not 2 channels of power, from panels or a charge co...

Re: Internal Cooling Fan Failure warning - how urgent is this?

I have a suggestion that may be of some help. I am in Southern California. In the summertime, we can reach temps up to 113 degrees and my system is in the garage. Suffice it to say, it can get hot and the Radian's performance degrades with temperatures over I believe 77 degrees (check the manual ple...

Re: Arrays two directions on same charge controller

Let's be clear. This thread has become about installing a lot of panels in an inefficient location because they are cheap, not because it is better. And pointing panels West or Southwest for summer sun produces less electricity due to heat than if you optimize for morning sun or winter sun depending...

Re: Arrays two directions on same charge controller

I read the post from Australia. A couple of comments. First, with time of use, solar companies are advocating Southwest and West facing panels to offset higher energy costs. Secondly, the fellow in Australia may have done just as well overall laying all panels nearly flat rather than dividing them i...

The lightening arrestors (for DC current) should be wired in at each combiner box of each array, not indoors. The load panel should have an AC current lightening arrestors installed.

Re: Arrays two directions on same charge controller

I agree with Raysun. Remember, a panel is not "dead" when not facing the sun. It will have a measurable voltage which will be lower than the maximum and a low amperage. If I have 10 panels at 100 watts (100% output) and 10 panels at 10 watts (10% output), my output is 1100 watts. Except the charge c...

Re: Inverter issues??

Not sure what you mean by trimetric, but the Outback fndc automatically sets to status of charge at 100% after a power outage. You must fully charge batteries to known 100% value ( check specific gravity or voltages at terminals) , then power off the fndc and repower it. This sets fndc to 100% when ...

Re: Radian 8048a Sell Back

Try this: stay in grid tied sell mode, then around 4-5 pm, set the mate 3 grid use tab interval 1 to drop (stop) the grid input. As it gets dark, your batteries will take over completely to power loads. Depending on load and battery capacity, set the grid use start timer. I use about 25% of my batte...

Re: Merging Three Systems to Feed an Inverter

In my setup, all 3 charge controllers charge the entire parallel bank, they never see an individual bank. And all of the issues you have raised have simply not happened in 3 years of use. The parallel bank functions as a single 96 cell 48 volt battery of 900 amps. Charging capacity is up to 180 amps...

Re: Merging Three Systems to Feed an Inverter

Well, I have 3 arrays and 3 charge controllers. I have a 4 string battery bank, each string is 48 volts. The charge controllers are programmed to limit the amperage into the batteries, the absorb and float voltages and times for each charge cycle. They know the battery voltage of the bank. They do n...

Re: Solar production numbers don't seem to add up.

If your goal is to use as much PV as you can and avoid selling to the grid as much as possible, then you can try this technique: Place system into grid tied mode, but set the sell voltage up high, almost near your absorb voltage. Your system will create a lot of PV and never sell back. Another techn...
