Re: FXR 2812A cut-off voltage shut down issue

Just wanted to provide an update. Almost 200 off-grid households here now on 15 square miles in the mountains North of Bozeman MT. Only one of which has any Outback gear at all. That one has a Mate2, which does me no good whatsoever. I purchased a Xantrex ProWatt 2000 for $350 and it has never tripp...

Re: FXR 2 812A cut-off voltage shut down issue

Yes VFXR 2812A TMK, it was in another system for less than a year, which was upgraded to 48V. So, you're saying (without actually stating so) that this unit can NOT be reset to factory spec (i.e., LVCO = 11.4V) without buying a $500 Mate3 et al !?! if so, that's not only crazy and a rip-off but crim...

Re: FXR 2812A cut-off voltage shut down issue

Yeah, I know OB's rep very well ... until now Battery 'bank' is 8 cases @ 6V nom, 235 AH ea. Interstate GC2's connected as 4 parallel strings of 2 ea. for 12V nom, 940 AH. All interconnects are 4/0 welding cable (stranded copper) with tinned ring lugs and each tested at zero ohms. I can't "dial" thi...

FXR 2812A cut-off voltage shut down issue

Hello again I've been off-grid for 25 years and came to trust Outback Power charge controllers and support. On 9/11/2018 my entire home/contents ('life') was lost in a human caused wildfire.   BTW, there is no such 'thing' as insurance for off-grid residences (at least in Montana). Also I am a disab...

Re: Can not find a working "String Sizing Tool"

Thanks for the responses As indicated (at my location with annual temp extremes from 105F to -30F) I had 2 parallel strings of 600W each into each FM80 on a 12V system without any incident for 12+ years. Worked great. Fully 'sold' on Outback's reliability. Given that I am intending to migrate to a 2...

Can not find a working "String Sizing Tool"

My off-grid home (Outback PV systems) was totally destroyed in a forest fire last fall. I am now planning to rebuild to the extend possible. Cannot find a String Sizing tool that works Have recently seen conflicting information on max wattage input to FM80's - formerly had 1200W of panels per FM80 @...

what about lithium ?

Given that LiFePO4 (LFP) cells now out-perform PbA's by at least 200% in terns of total lifetime stored energy cost, I'm seriously wanting to replacing my leaden 20th century has-beens with safer, longer lasting, and enviro-friendly tech. BUT BUT BUT, apparently no manufacture yet produces CC's comp...

Re: VFX2812 wiring without transfer

Thanks for the replies folks - but does not apply - so far. This isn't for my system but rather for a neighbor just getting started on solar. He does have a grid connection (unreliable) but wants the solar system totally separate with the exception on recharging the batteries from the internal OB in...

VFX2812 wiring without transfer

Reviewed the VFX install manual - and shockingly saw nothing about wiring an install without use of the transfer switch. The application will be as stand-alone (seperate circuits from the current/grid panel) but is at a grid connected location. Desire is toto power the battery charger from either th...

Re: String Sizing Tool for MX and FM Charge Controllers

thanks - I assumed 5 of such panels would be the maximum but that an odd number wouldn't work for series-parallel and also 'thot' that 5 in parallel would present too high current. So all in parallel eh?. Makes for lots of (10) wire runs! RE Apple - yes its PPC so 10.4.11 is the latest OS. Works gre...

Re: String Sizing Tool for MX and FM Charge Controllers

apparently this 'tool' will NOT run from a MAC OS-X platform - Oracle has NO version of JRE available for 10.4 or later. So, I'm planning to increase my PV array. And add another FM80. The panels on my current system are no longer available. Seems as though the best price per watt right now is Canad...

Re: FM80 main menu access broken

If the unit was purchased before Jan 1st 2011 it has a two year warranty... If purchase after Jan 1st 2011 it has a 5 year warranty. Call Tech support at 3606184363... It sounds like you have a bad button pad. Well, thank you for that phone number. I called it and was 'shocked' by how helpful they ...

FM80 main menu access broken

I have a 2 year old FM80 on which the left-most menu access button (switch) seems to have completely stopped working . No matter how long or hard or how many times one pushes the button nothing at all happens regardless what other mode (sattus/summary) it might happen to be in. Also, to get all (any...

Re: FM80 panel/control access issues

Update: well, persistence pays dividends. I went back out there and pressed and held down the two center keys together (at least a minute) since I was assuming that the left and right keys were 'dead'. Finally it gave me the reset log page again (choice of which log to clear). However, it still woul...

FM80 panel/control access issues

Suddenly the access/control buttons on my FM80 are not functioning properly (unit is approx 16 months old and worked fine up until now). The left-most key (main menu access, etc) does not seem to work at all now. And the right-most key is highly problematic meaning it won't respond most of the time....

Snow B Gone ?

I am assuming that at least some forum members live in snow-country. I'm wondering if anyone here has perhaps tried using (applying) the product know as "Rain-X" to PV panels? Or found any other possible solutions to reducing/removing snow cover? Rain-X does 'work wonders' on helicopter and airplane...

"Do not parallel ... the same array"?

Well. finally getting around to connecting up a new FM80 and came across this little gem in the User's Manual". Section 3, page 12 "Notes: Each Charge Controller requires its own PV array. DO NOT PARALLEL Charge Controller PV+ and PV- TERMINALS ON THE SAME ARRAY" [all caps preserved] What the 'H' is...

Re: Exterior wire specification FACTS (USA- NEC) - FYI

Thanks for the "electroendosmosis" reference. I'd forgotten what the proper term was. But I did recall from 'days of legend and lore' in the US Navy's Submarine Service (electronic systems tech.) of their rampant paranoia about DC current leakage (or whatever you want to call it). I don't know about...

Re: Exterior wire specification FACTS (USA- NEC) - FYI

Hey 'tallgirl' GO to ANY manufacturer of THHN/THWN/THWN-2 wire's web page. You will see (most often on front/top page), "THIS PRODUCT IS NOT RECOMMENDED (or rated) FOR DC voltages under WET conditions" - or some equally clear. concise, nearly identical statement (of fact). They do NOT make said stat...

Exterior wire specification FACTS (USA- NEC) - FYI

Hi folks I'm STILL struggling with interconnect wire selection for the panels. - Yeah, I know this isn't a "Outback" question/issue per se. But it is a highly frustrating one - for me anyway. ALL the panel manufacturers - and vendors - claim and sell THWN-2 stranded copper for use with their panels....

Re: selecting array wiring configuration

Thanks Crewzer So, two strings of 3 panels each in series in parallel (3x2) for 24 V 'rated' panel output would work best in my location both summer and winter. On the wiring size, I have 2/0 AWG 'welding' cable already, I presume I can trim the strands at the terminal connection such that as many c...
