Re: How does the FNDC determine which sources are connected to it’s terminals?

Here's another exercise to help determine what To Battery and From Battery are showing. Configure system so the charge controller is on one shunt, and the Inverter on a 2nd shunt. (Probably like this now.) On a day with values showing in To Battery and From Battery, note the values, disconnect the ...

Re: How does the FNDC determine which sources are connected to it’s terminals?

Okay, here’s an example of how this gets confusing to me (someone new to OB setup/terminology). Notice in the first quote below, you very capably describe how you have used 2 shunts to measure current: A=current from battery to inverter, and B=current from PV to battery. In my mind, when you say “PV...

Re: OpticsRE says I have a magic free energy machine...

"For instance: how can the Optice RE list current from solar and to battery as separate graph bars if both of those currents go through the same shunt?" OK maybe 3rd time's a charm. SOLAR is taken from the OUTPUT of the FM80 charge controller(s) as reported by their internal ammeters. This value IS...

Re: OpticsRE says I have a magic free energy machine...

how can the Optice RE list current from solar and to battery as separate graph bars if both of those currents go through the same shunt? The From Solar data doesn't go through any of the FNDC shunts -- it goes directly from the FM80 to the Mate, presumably through the Cat5 cables. Very interesting!...

Re: OpticsRE says I have a magic free energy machine...

The FNDC has room for three shunts. Why are you ganging them on one side or the other? Just add another shunt and measure whats coming in from the panels/FM, another going out to the inverter or yet another going out/in elsewhere? It's a cool device. What am I missing? What you can't easily get is ...

Re: OpticsRE says I have a magic free energy machine...

Removing the unused shunt by unplugging it from the FNDC will certainly remove any influence it has on the system - as long as the port is also disabled in the FNDC configuration as well. Disabling the unused port in the FNDC configuration alone would have the same effect. Moving the PV neg. to the...

How does the FNDC determine which sources are connected to it’s terminals?

The FNDC has 3 terminals where the twisted pair wires from across shunts connect to the FNDC. Those terminals are labeled A/B/C at the FNDC and enabled by the same names in the MATE3 software setup. The purpose of all those connections, as I understand it, is to allow the FNDC to more accurately cal...

Re: OpticsRE says I have a magic free energy machine...

To get back to the original issue: the OpticsRE data was showing more energy to the batteries than the PV was producing. Per some of the suggestions here I made the following changes: 1) I disabled shunt C and removed it’s twisted pair (TP) from connection C on the FNDC - preciously shunt C had been...

Re: Few-x240 Autotransformer 20A circuit tripping

Here’s a bit of an update. I managed to speak with the electrician who installed This system and asked about the breaker tripping. His comment was that there could be an imbalance or phase issue in the loads on L1 & L2, possibly from some device that was added to one side of the transformer after th...

Re: Parameters met but system stays in Absorb

After reading the passage a bit more, I stand by my first statement  ..... The Global Charger Output Control is for something completely different, when you want to limit the total charging current when several different components are charging at the same time. Okay, makes some sense. I will...

Re: Parameters met but system stays in Absorb

So any thoughts on what the “Maximum Battery Charge” parameter there is controlling? Is that a global current limit, or related to one of the other parameters on that page, or...? That's the total of all the currents that might be charging at the same time (say, from two FM80's and two inverters wo...

Re: Parameters met but system stays in Absorb

Yes, I found that bit in the manual too. I Was trying to digest the part about the FM80 needing to be in GT mode (assume that means grid tie...?). We are an off grid system and the only AC input the Inverter/chargers see is when the genny kicks in (rare). After reading the passage a bit more, I sta...

Re: Parameters met but system stays in Absorb

I assume both the highlighted should be changed to enabled - yes? Here's what the Mate3s manual says about Global Charger Output Control: Global Charger Control.jpg For just having the FNDC stop absorb when charge parameters are met, you only need to enable the Auto Charge Termination Control. oops...

Re: Parameters met but system stays in Absorb

Update: System hit FM80 ABSORB TIME (2hrs) and has now entered Float stage. Green FNDC LED still blinking, SOC still at 83% Seems like the FNDC is not functioning and the FM80 has control. Still puzzled... RM Addendum: Hmmm, okay, now the Time since parameters met has been reset to 0, the FNDC LED”s...

Parameters met but system stays in Absorb

AFAICT, my FNDC should have terminated the Absorb stage - based on the status from OpticsRE (and LCD panel on the FM80) the CHARGED VOLTAGE, CHARGED RETURN AMPS, & CHARGED TIME parameters have been met. The top green LED on the FNDC is blinking, yet the system is still in Absorb. Am I reading the Da...

Re: OpticsRE says I have a magic free energy machine...

Yes, the pole is set in concrete. Should be accessible with a long enough ladder. As you suggest, I think there is more we can get from these panels. I don’t think the actual owner has had time or motivation to experiment. The system was working “okay”, but tripping the genny a fair amount. I think ...

Re: OpticsRE says I have a magic free energy machine...

Well it looks like the panels are on top of a pole, held by an apparatus the appears to be able to rotate. I need to get up there and check but it appears that Loosening a couple bolts should allow it to rotate L/R o top of the pole. Is there something else that would limit that rotation? I mean, ot...

Re: OpticsRE says I have a magic free energy machine...

In our set up I see a plus/minus pair from each of the panel strings (4 pairs) disappearing into the conduit outside, then inside on the other end I see just a plus/minus PV exiting the conduit into the DC box. I don’t know how they’re combined in between those two places. Well, if you ever need an...

Re: OpticsRE says I have a magic free energy machine...

As I think of it, it might not be a bad idea to do this after dark. I have bright emergency lighting (separate batteries for those lights) in the shed where the OB system is housed. I suppose if there is no output from the PV it would give an extra measure of safety. Overkill? Maybe not! Do you hav...

Re: OpticsRE says I have a magic free energy machine...

Before moving that PV- cable I suppose it would be wise to shut down the whole system per OB procedure. Other than that are there any other steps / precautions I should take when making that change (other than realizing that I would be holding a live DC connection from the PV- and not letting it sh...

Re: OpticsRE says I have a magic free energy machine...

Hello again, attached are some pictures which should make things a little easier to understand. Also not quite clear on the PV’s return neg path - looks like it can go through shunt B or directly back to the PV panel, is that how it should work...? I would disconnect the twpr from shunt c, both fro...
