Re: temperature coefficient question

I suspected that positive coefficient might be due to some heating effect on the electrons, as heat has to alter energy levels at the molecular (crystal) level. But yes, it is a very small effect compared to the Voc coefficient. With +0.2 mA/°C and the 37°C above STC we had during thee test yesterda...

temperature coefficient question

The coefficient for my new CSUN panels is given as -0.42%/°C (according to the spec sheet). This is the power coefficient, which I believe would be used to derate the panels for performance on hot days. So I just started testing the 20yo Astropower panels (AP-7105s) that were replaced. Need to see h...

Re: Saharan Dust

That Saharan dust plume isn't projected to get this far west. But I have seen reduced output, maybe 10% or so, because of smoke from wildfires. Several are burning in Arizona as I write. Recently saw a forecast from NWS that uses one of their new updated icon set. We've dealt with wildfires before, ...

Re: Missing Devices?

Wow, those are both newer than what I'm running, and my system was installed in late January. Can't imagine the update messed with anything, or we'd probably be hearing about it here. I assume we both have v4.5.1 of OpticsRE, but I'm a newbie to that software and still learning my way around. Don't ...

Re: Missing Devices?

Is the MATE3s firmware you're running version 001.004.002?
And what version is the GS8048? I have the GS4048 and it's running 001.006.063.
Both are current versions to my knowledge.

Never happens here in AZ, but every 10 years or so we get the Moon at the zenith. No output from the array though. :)

Re: reboot MATE3s

I get that. But my Hub is mounted to the same plywood panel and is also accessed through the back. Maybe I should add a panel-mounted push-button 8-pole momentary disconnect switch between the MATE3s and Hub. :)

But seriously folks ... why would anyone want to enable that 24 hr auto reset function?

Re: reboot MATE3s

Pulling the CAT5 cable is a good trick to know, but in my case the MATE3s is mounted to a plywood surface and connected through the back. So I'd need to remove 4 screws to access it. Wouldn't take too long if I had to do it but really prefer the gateway reset via OpticsRE. If the MATE3s menu isn't f...

Re: reboot MATE3s

Good to know that reloading the firmware is yet another option, thanks raysun. Not much I can do at this point is wait to see if it happens again and what it takes to fix it. Hoping others weigh in with their experiences.

reboot MATE3s

I know this topic has been discussed before: http://outbackpower.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13364&sid=5186f1a1b9a9b2f6abc44fd6940639c2 but just wanted to say that David LeBow's suggestion worked perfectly for me. My system had been running fine for 3 months after install. Today I walked into the shop...

Re: array temperature question

Those were all informative links, thanks. Curious they didn't show up in my search. Regarding cooling the panels ... I wonder why they don't use a back panel colored high emissivity black? Sure, you'll get some IR from the ground during the day, but if the panel temperature is higher than the ground...

Re: array temperature question

For sure. White is the only sensible color for a roof in Arizona. Here's what mine looks like:

That's two inches of poly foam with an elastomeric sealant. You can walk on it just fine. As long as you ain't wearing cleats. :)

Re: array temperature question

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I've already posted significant info on panel temperatures and power output. Search the forum. Forget tape. Know the ambient temperature, use a laser thermometer and point it at the panel surface, then the nearby ground. You will see how much hotter the panel surface becomes. I'm ...

Re: array temperature question

Would it make much difference what color tape I use? I mean, as long as it isn't aluminized or something like that. I think the temp. of the glass under it won't be very affected by the tape -- tan might be better than the dark blue stuff  . Do some experiments and let us know! Count on it. I...

Re: array temperature question

Great idea. Shouldn't take long for the masking tape to reach the same temperature as the glass. Would it make much difference what color tape I use? I mean, as long as it isn't aluminized or something like that.

array temperature question

The CSUN panels in my array have a temperature coefficient of -0.42% / °C (according to the spec sheet). This is the power coefficient, which I believe is the proper one to use for de-rating array output. I'm interested in how they actually perform because I'm in Arizona. I get how to do the actual ...

Re: cool hack for FNDC

I knew a lieutenant in the AF who told me a story about when he was assigned to the DEW Line in Alaska. Said he once saw a bird fly into the beam path (which was low for OTH radar) just as a pulse was generated. The bird dropped immediately to the ground and was thoroughly cooked by the time it hit....

Before/after array pics for comparison: Great photos! Looks like you're living the sun-powered dream! Indeed, thanks. Did you notice the "solar cooker" also in that photo? You should feel how warm that satellite antenna (the receiving module) gets in the spring and fall when the Sun is near DirecTV...

Re: cool hack for FNDC

Yeah, back in the 90s when I was still teaching (science) I had one of those early classic discolored ARCO panels donated by a parent. 40W at 12V if I recall correctly. Had it in a sunny window wired to an electric pencil sharpener. It had only around half its rated output but most of the time it ha...

Re: cool hack for FNDC

No doubt, the higher the W/sf the greater the efficiency, all things being equal. I thought the Astropower panels were pretty cool technology when I bought them. Optimized for hotter climates, perfect for Arizona. But these CSUNs are more forgiving of partial shading and have even better temperature...

Re: strange current from battery

Thanks, I guess that explains where the power is going. Wondering why it doesn't take that power from the grid (at off-peak no less). Is there a setting somewhere in the menu system that controls this? Obviously, I have AC INPUT USE already selected.

strange current from battery

OpticsRE is showing a small amount of power flowing from the battery all through the night. It ain't much, like on the order of 0.01-0.02 kWh. Attached a screenshot: battery.jpg Is this considered normal behavior for a grid-tied system? Am I just seeing something within the range of measurement erro...

Re: cool hack for FNDC

The technology definitely has advanced. When I found out that I could replace my original 16 Astropower panels with 9 CSUNs and get triple the power in the same roof space my jaw dropped. Likewise the BOS ... that old Trace SW4024 had an alphanumeric LCD user interface for all the programming and mo...

Re: cool hack for FNDC

I never owned any other OB controller. The current system (described in my profile) replaced a 20 yo Trace system. I was using an RV Products Solar Boost-50 MMPT which was still working fine and will be sold with the rest of the used (but still functional) system on Craigs List or Letgo. My main rea...
