Re: Configuring generator to fully charge batteries

At the recommendation of the off-grid system expert (who, unfortunately, uses simpler charge controllers, so he's not an expert on batteries), I backed off the voltages on my batteries to see if the detected off-gassing would stop. I scaled all of them back .4v (their original setting, as shown earl...

Re: Recommended tools and strats for managing AGM batteries

If you have the budget then it is probably best to get batteries that are produced for solar/renewable energy applications. Hopefully these come with an appropriate user manual that detail all that is required to keep them at their optimal condition. Have a look at the Hoppecke VRLA manual for the ...

Re: Recommended tools and strats for managing AGM batteries

Thanks for so much detail! I've been filling my head so full of voltage I'm kind of hoping I have a built-in pressure valve too. :) Kind of had to stop thinking about things for a day or two there while I rested and reset mentally. So, delightful story, the installers actually purchased an RTS for u...

Recommended tools and strats for managing AGM batteries

Curious what all tools you all recommend one should have on hand for monitoring and maintaining AGM batteries. Most of what I find online when I research it focuses on automotive and marine applications, and I'm not sure if those situations are exactly analogous to powering an off-grid house. So far...

Re: Configuring generator to fully charge batteries

Oh how delightful. I guess this can happen when the company who does something for you is profoundly inept (there is so much backing this statement that I won't bore you with the details). And I guess I should include myself in that camp for not being more skeptical and aggressively evaluating their...

Re: Configuring generator to fully charge batteries

The "VRLA" bit is the important bit, It is an emergency blow off valve, Which in your case seems to have blown,,,,, There is NO permitted venting otherwise, No Warranty on venting, CO2 detector is useless as you are looking for hydrogen, lso, how does temperature sensing work in conjunction with th...

Re: Configuring generator to fully charge batteries

I've never seen a specification of allowable venting per charge cycle, but would assume it to be near zero. That's what I'd assume, too, given what I've read and been told about them. That's why I'm so puzzled. We haven't set any voltage values very high or anything, just to what was recommended he...

Re: Configuring generator to fully charge batteries

If you have "off gassed" you AGMs,,, You have a very serious problem, Overvoltage was most likely the cause, possibly caused by lack of good temp sensing ? But Basically, They are dead and I would suggest you do not use them anymore, They may have become dangerous, Tim Oh... I hadn't considered tha...

Re: Configuring generator to fully charge batteries

Thanks for the suggestions, DavzRVPort. We do wish to integrate some venting (they do have a few small holes in them to at least allow a bit of circulation), but I've been told that these batteries do not create appreciable amounts of gas except in overcharge scenarios. We're still trying to figure ...

Re: Configuring generator to fully charge batteries

Oops, sorry, I ended up falling ill there, so I'm trying to catch back up on things. I hope to address many of the comments here soon, but I had a possibly related question that's considerably more urgent. We have had this new config in place for a while now, and in some ways it's great. However, we...

Re: Configuring generator to fully charge batteries

Tim, thanks for the additional details / thoughts! What do the absorb and float times do, by the way? What makes the float time in the inverter a waste of fuel in your estimation? I only have an incredibly basic understanding of float; basically, it means the batteries are fully charged and not real...

Re: Configuring generator to fully charge batteries

You are so helpful, I can't thank you enough! There's a saying that your first set of batteries becomes a sacrifice to the learning gods...hopefully, not always true. Wow, I kinda wish I'd been introduced to the off-gridders quote book earlier in this process. :) Maybe I'll start compiling one to sh...

Re: Configuring generator to fully charge batteries

Hey Mike, surely they must be wired in that manner if they're working at all, right? Just to be sure, I'll try to verify that tonight. I hear you on the learning curve, been riding it for a while now (just haven't had to deal with battery configs yet). It's just the kind I believe I need to experien...

Re: Configuring generator to fully charge batteries

Wow, thanks for the detailed steps and help! Okay, let me see what I can provide. According to our house builder / installer, these are the batteries we have. We have eight (8) of them, split into two groups of four (4) wired in parallel (at least that's my understanding). https://www.centennialbatt...

Re: Configuring generator to fully charge batteries

When you say that the generator stops charging, do you mean it shuts itself off, or what? Or, if it keeps running, what indication do you have that charging has stopped? The generator keeps running, but it stops charging the batteries. It continues carrying house loads actively, but won't touch the...

Re: Configuring generator to fully charge batteries

Hey Tim, If I remember correctly, I have only changed the following in the Mate3s: Settings > Inverter > AC Input and Current Limit (modified generator amperage in two places). I believe I also would have made changes in the "Gen AC Input Mode and Limits" if I could. This was when I was trying to ch...

Configuring generator to fully charge batteries

Hey there! I'm having trouble configuring our generator to reliably fully charge the batteries. We have what I would guess is an "out of the box" configuration, for the most part, regarding the generator (or so I've been told by our installer). I only have theories about what the inverter or charge ...

Re: Configuring generator to not directly carry house loads

Jorge, thanks for the resource! I'll check it out when I get a chance. Do you by chance have a video or concise written resource describing the three-stage charging process? Just trying to soak up all I can about these systems. I poked around for DC generators or battery chargers, as jbakker suggest...

Re: Configuring generator to not directly carry house loads

Thanks so much for the reply, Jorge! Ahh, okay, that's unfortunate. Is there a technical reason why that's not possible? Is there any chance it'll be made available in future firmware or system updates, or with future hardware? Does this "rough" load cause any problems for house electronics? Are the...

Configuring generator to not directly carry house loads

Hey there, Is it possible to configure an Outback system's connected generator to only directly charge the batteries and ignore house loads? I would prefer to use my generator only on the batteries, and to have house loads pull from the batteries at all times. I'm not using an inverter generator (op...

Re: Replacing a Mate3s without config backup, implications

Thanks so much for the response! I don't think our system has any advanced, MATE3s-specific configurations in place (or I hope not; if it does, it seems like losing them won't affect basic functionality), and I will definitely do some deep reviewing once we get the replacement device. I'm eager to a...

Replacing a Mate3s without config backup, implications

Hey everyone! This is my first time on this forum; so glad this resource exists! I'm a new owner of Outback hardware (only had it for 3 months now), and unfortunately I'm having a weird issue with my Mate3s. I can't upgrade firmware, and can't access any menu items within the configuration space on ...
