Re: One leg of the inverter exceeding 4000 watts.

That's what I was hoping you would say. I didn't worry about it until Sense showed me what was happening. Thanks for the reply.

Re: One leg of the inverter exceeding 4000 watts.

Per the Radian manual p.21 each leg is limited to 4 kVA continuous. The VA rating is not the same as watts and depends what the PF (power factor) is of the equipment that is running. I am sure raysun will have more to add on PF. You got this. Im busy converting all my equipment and appliance...

One leg of the inverter exceeding 4000 watts.

I'm actually posting this question so I can gain some knowledge - not because I'm having problems that I'm aware of. We have been using our GS8048A off grid for over three years now and have surely been having this issue but did not even know it. The issue I'm referring to is that I'm looking at Opt...

Re: Brand recommendations for battery chargers?

Well, thank you both for your replies but Outback tech support just responded to me finally and said it could possibly damage my inverter and/or my batteries. So, I replied back to them asking if there is an alternative. I'm wondering if the response will be to add another 8048A inverter? That's not...

Re: Brand recommendations for battery chargers?

I don't have an answer for this post but on this subject I would like to ask if anyone out there is actually supplementing their inverter controlled generator charging with a third party charger and thus charging the batteries with two chargers at the same time while the generator is running? WE ARE...

Re: Best way to turn off generator

I was actually referring to a charger that is rated for a 600 amp hour battery bank which I believe is about 100 amps DC output. My generator and battery bank should be fine with this.

Re: Best way to turn off generator

Thanks, ralphday224. My situation is a little different in that we do not have grid power. So my question to you is "Do you ever charge your batteries with a generator through your inverter and at the same time, using a battery charger which is also powered by the same generator?" Will this cause da...

jbakker, that's not a bad idea

It sounds expensive but I will certainly look into that.

Thanks.

Re: Best way to turn off generator

Thank you. I prefer to use the web interface rather than the mate but the order seems to be the same. Concerning your second comment, I can only the charge the batteries at a maximum rate of 7.4 KW in "Backup" mode because of the internal "breaker" built into the inverter. In "Generator" mode, the m...

Re: Best way to turn off generator

Thanks for the reply. I didn't have a real good reason but I felt like that was the best way to do it. Your reasoning makes sense and I will continue using the "drop AC" method in the future.

Best way to turn off generator

So I kind of screwed up and bought a 20 KW Kohler propane generator which uses $4 to $5 of propane per hour and yet due to the amperage limit of the Radian inverter, only outputs less than 10 KW depending on our load. However, this was just a side note leading to my question. I always start the gene...

Re: Inverter will not charge up to generator ac input limit

By the way, I did get a response from Outback support who recommended changing the Radian AC Input Generator mode to "Backup" rather than "Generator". This did the trick. The generator will send 30 amps to the battery plus additional amps to the load (as long as it is not more than about 2 to 3 KW).

Radian Inverter Temperature Ratings

Can someone tell me if the rated max temperature of the GS8048A inverter which seems to be 122 degrees fahrenheit is referring to the XFMR temperature or the Cap temperature or the FET temperature? Both modules XFMR temperatures stay near or above that 122 degrees but the fans don't seem to be turni...

Re: Inverter will not charge up to generator ac input limit

The AC Input Current Limit is set to 50 amps and the AC Charger Limit is 30 amps. Our load never exceeds about 12 amps while running our generator. I see on the Systems Information screen on the Mate3 a setting called Max Charger KW. Mine is set to 5.5 KW. I don't know where this came from but this ...

Inverter will not charge up to generator ac input limit

My inverter will not charge my 3000 amp hour lead acid battery bank higher than 21 amps AC. I have checked my settings many times and the AC Input Charger AC Limit is set to 30 AAC (which is the maximum setting). Is there a setting I am not finding?

Re: How do I add another string?

Again, this is all timely and useful information and much appreciated. Most of it makes perfect sense to me now since I am living this condition. We are truly off grid so we only have a generator to make up for the charge deficiency during the day at this time. One more hardware question for you: I ...

Re: How do I add another string?

Wow, very timely and educational reply. As a matter of fact, I had already decided one more array of 12 panels would still not be enough so I ordered 24 more 280 watt panels and two Outback FM-80s. I have almost all of the parts needed onsite now but I did not realize about the four pole ground faul...

Radian 8048 dropping voltage on "Drop A/C" from generator

We have been living off grid for about 6 weeks now. We have a Radian 8048 inverter. We only have 6240 watts of solar panels (I will be installing another 6740 watts worth of panels in the next 3 months) and we are using approximately 30 KWH per day thanks to mini split air conditioning which makes i...

Re: How do I add another string?

For sure you'll need another 80 amp breaker between your FM80 and your battery, and another breaker(s) (sized appropriately for the new array's short circuit current) between your new array and the new FM80. If your current load center doesn't have spaces for these additional breakers then you'll h...

How do I add another string?

I currently have an off grid system using 2 12 panel arrays providing up to 6140 watts, 2 FM 80 charge controllers, one GSLC175PV load center and a GS8048 invertor. My only issue is that this is just not quite enough solar input to charge my 48 volt 1500 amp hour battery bank while I run a house at ...
